Description

Historical Note

The Congregationalists of the First United Parish traced their origins back to the founding of the South Malden Sunday School Union by Joanna T. Oliver in 1847. Attendance at this school grew so large that eventually a council was held to institute the Winthrop Congregational Church on March 16th, 1848. The First Congregational Church of Everett was formed in an 1870 merger between the Winthrop and South Malden (established 1858) Congregational Churches. Arthur B. Patten, lyricist of the hymn "Faith of Our Mothers", was minister at this church from 1895-1897. It joined the First Federated Parish in the 1970s along with the First Methodist Episcopal Church. This organization became the First United Parish in 1994, which dissolved in 2013.
