Historical Note

The Metropolitan Boston Association (MBA), part of the Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ, was created about 1970 from the merger of the Suffolk North, Suffolk South, Suffolk West, and Woburn Associations. The purpose was to "unify denominational forces in the Greater Boston for more effective services and cooperation with other denominations." Individual churches maintain membership in the Association until they close, decide to go or remain independent, or merge with another church.

For several decades, the MBA was headquartered at 14 Beacon Street. When they moved offices, they deposited more files to be added to the original collection.

Scope and Content Note

Series 1 -- Institutional Records

This section includes by-laws, committee reports and minutes. These documents were originally kept in 3 ring binders. Each section was given separate folders and they are arranged in the order kept in the binder, plus the few items from the original deposit.

Series 2 -- Church Files

Several churches have closed, become inactive, or left the United Church of Christ since the formation of the Association. The files the MBA kept on those churches make up the bulk of this collection.

Included in the files are correspondence, statistics, histories, annual reports, studies, programs, and minutes, primarily relating to the churches’ decisions to close or leave the Association. Some of the records also refer to outstanding loans or mortgages and the legal aspects of settling assets when the church disbands.

The files are arranged in alphabetical order by name of the community in which the church existed, so: "Boston. Park Street Church." Several churches are listed by Boston followed by the incorporated city name: "Boston / Dorchester".
